Jose Tongzon
University of Tasmania, Australia

Jose L. Tongzon, PhD has had more than twenty-five (25) years of teaching and research experience in various countries in the area of international trade, port and maritime economics focusing on the economies of Southeast Asia. He has just joined the Australian Maritime College (AMC), University of Tasmania where he teaches Supply Chain Management and Business Logistics after spending more than 15 years at the National University of Singapore where he taught economics and carried out research on ports and maritime-related issues of relevance to the Asian region. Prior to his long stint in Singapore, he had provided economic advice in the management of the port of Melbourne and managed other research activities of relevance to the port while he was Chief Economist of the Port of Melbourne from 1988 to 1992.

He also has exposure to international trade policy formulations as he worked for several years for the Ministry of Trade of the Philippine government (1976-1980) as Special Assistant to the then Deputy Minister for Trade and was mostly involved in trade policy formulation and trade negotiations in the multilateral contexts such the World Trade Organization (formerly GATT) and UNCTAD) and in regional contexts including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

He has published several articles in refereed international journals and books in the area of international trade, port and maritime issues related to the Asian region and has served as an international trade consultant for international and regional agencies [such as the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), United Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), World Bank (WB), Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the ASEAN Secretariat] and other private organizations.
